5 Budget-Friendly Travel Tips for Dog Owners

If you’re a dog owner, you know how it feels to leave your pup behind when you go on vacation. That pitiful whine they give as you walk away can cut straight to the heart, and instead of relaxing, maybe you spend a lot of your time away wondering if your dog is dealing with separation anxiety. Fortunately, you can avoid this heartache on your next vacation. It only takes a little more preparation than normal to include your pup on a trip, and it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. Here are five budget-friendly ways to plan a trip when you have a dog:

1. Evaluate the destination

First of all, you have to think about your dog when you decide where to go on your trip. You want to make sure there is plenty for both of you to do so that you can relax and have a good time together. Going to the beach is a great choice for dog owners because most beaches have dog-friendly areas, which gives your dog space to run around. And if your dog likes to swim, all the better. If going to the beach isn’t in the cards, at least make sure there are places you can visit with your pup each day, like dog-friendly restaurants and dog parks. These are all options that cost little to nothing.

2. Book suitable lodging

It’s also important to consider your dog’s needs when you’re looking for a place to stay. There are numerous hotels that allow pets, but you will be better off finding one that welcomes them. Some even offer dog-specific amenities like dog beds, spa services and daycare. If you choose a dog-friendly hotel, be sure to confirm the total price and consider your budget before booking, as some hotels charge a pet deposit. Also, make sure you are clear on the pet policy and that you abide by the rules. The last thing you want is a problem that forces you and your pup to find new lodgings. Alternatively, if you like camping, staying at a campground may be your most budget-friendly option, as many of these sites assume pets as part of the price.

3. Pack the necessities

Gathering all your dog’s essential items before you leave will help you avoid having to make runs to the store once you get to your destination. Here are a few examples of items you should plan to bring:

  • Travel carrier
  • Collar/harness
  • Leash
  • Collapsible food and water bowls
  • Dry or canned food

If you already have the necessary traveling gear and items for your pup, make sure they’re clean and ready for use. If you need to purchase gear, look online at retailers like Amazon for or Chewy for the best deals. What’s better, you can save even more money by using

Amazon coupons or discounts from Chewy.

4. Call the vet

Before you embark on your adventure, it’s important that your dog is all caught up on their vaccinations. Contact your vet for a full update on your pup, and schedule an appointment if necessary. You also may need to pick up paperwork to show when in another state, and you can ask the vet for advice on traveling with your pup while you’re there, such as ways to prevent anxiety and car sickness.

5. Travel well

Finally, to help prevent your dog from becoming overly anxious during the trip, try to condition them for the method of traveling you’ll be using. Take them for some car rides if you’ll be driving, or let them visit the airport, bus station or train station to take in all the sights and smells. Routine is essential for dogs, so exposing them to new environments beforehand can help ease their worries and paves the way for an easier journey.

Instead of leaving your pup behind, consider bringing them along with you on your next vacation. Just be sure to think through where you’ll be staying, and bring along the essential items they’ll need. By getting an all-clear from the vet and planning for the traveling process, you’ll be ready to go. With a little preparation, you can create lasting memories and a stronger bond with your pup next time you travel.
